How we collect, use, and protect your personal data — and your rights under POPIA and GDPR.

1. Introduction

Teka SA (Pty) Ltd ("Teka", "we", "us", or "our") operates the Teka mobile application (available on Android and iOS) and the website at teka-mh.co.za. We are committed to protecting your personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) and, for users in the European Economic Area, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, who we share it with, and what your rights are. By using Teka, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.

2. Who We Are (Data Controller)

Teka SA (Pty) Ltd is the data controller responsible for your personal information.

3. Information We Collect

3.1 Information You Provide

  • Account registration: email address, username, display name, profile photo, and date of birth (required for age verification — you must be 18 or older to register)
  • ID verification: government-issued ID or equivalent document used for age verification at sign-up. This is processed and not stored on Teka's servers beyond verification.
  • Content you upload: videos, thumbnails, captions, hashtags, and any other content posted to the platform
  • Communications: messages you send to our support team
  • Payment information: bank account details, mobile money numbers, or other withdrawal method details you provide for receiving earnings payouts

3.2 Information We Collect Automatically

  • Usage data: videos watched, content interactions (likes, comments, shares, follows), time spent on the platform, search queries
  • Device information: device type, operating system version, unique device identifiers, mobile network information
  • Log data: IP address, access times, pages/screens viewed, referring URLs
  • Location data: country-level location derived from IP address (not precise GPS location)
  • Advertising data: ad impressions served on your content, estimated ad revenue generated — collected via Google AdMob

3.3 Referral Information

If you join Teka via a referral link, we store the referral code (in session storage only) to attribute the referral to the referring creator. This is not linked to your personal profile beyond the initial attribution.

We have data processing agreements in place with all third-party processors. We do not sell your personal data to third parties.

6. Creator Earnings & Financial Data

When you earn revenue on Teka, we collect and store earnings data (ad impressions, revenue amounts, withdrawal records) in order to calculate and pay your 50-60% revenue share. Financial transaction records are retained for a minimum of 7 years as required by South African tax law (Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 and Value Added Tax Act 89 of 1991).

Important: Withdrawal payment details (bank accounts, mobile money numbers) are stored securely in Firestore and used solely for processing payouts. We do not store full payment card numbers.

7. Advertising (Google AdMob)

Teka uses Google AdMob to display advertisements on creator videos. Google AdMob may use your device's advertising identifier (GAID on Android, IDFA on iOS) to serve personalised ads. Ad revenue generated by your content is shared with you at 50-60% of net revenue.

You can opt out of personalised advertising in your device settings (Android: Google Settings → Ads; iOS: Settings → Privacy → Tracking). Opting out of personalised ads does not affect your ability to use Teka or earn revenue — non-personalised ads will be served instead.

9. Your Rights

Under POPIA (South African users) and GDPR (EEA users), you have the following rights:

  • Right to Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Right to Rectification: Correct inaccurate or incomplete personal data
  • Right to Erasure ("Right to Be Forgotten"): Request deletion of your personal data — see our Account Deletion Policy
  • Right to Restriction: Request that we limit processing of your data in certain circumstances
  • Right to Data Portability: Receive your personal data in a structured, machine-readable format
  • Right to Object: Object to processing based on legitimate interests, including direct marketing
  • Right to Withdraw Consent: Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it at any time
  • Right to Lodge a Complaint: South African users may complain to the Information Regulator; EEA users may contact their national data protection authority

10. Cookies and Tracking

The Teka website (teka-mh.co.za) uses minimal cookies:

  • Functional cookies: Session state, referral code tracking (stored in session storage, not cookies)
  • Google AdSense: Our website uses Google AdSense (publisher ID: ca-pub-5257620219014817) which may set cookies for ad personalisation. You can manage these via your Google account or browser settings.

The Teka mobile app does not use browser cookies. Device identifiers used for advertising are managed through your device's operating system settings.

11. Children's Privacy

Teka is an adult platform. You must be 18 years of age or older to create an account or access creator features. We require age verification (government-issued ID) at sign-up to enforce this requirement.

We do not knowingly collect personal data from individuals under 18. If we become aware that a user under 18 has provided us with personal data, we will take steps to delete that information immediately. If you believe a minor has registered on Teka, please contact us at support@teka-mh.co.za.

12. International Transfers

Teka is incorporated in South Africa, but our third-party service providers (Google Firebase, Google AdMob, Paystack) operate globally, including in the United States. When we transfer your personal data outside South Africa or the EEA, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission or equivalent mechanisms under POPIA.

13. Security

We implement industry-standard technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data, including:

  • Encryption of data in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest
  • Firebase Security Rules to prevent unauthorised database access
  • Authentication via Firebase Auth (secure, token-based)
  • Regular security reviews and access controls
  • Staff training on data protection

No method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. If you discover a security vulnerability, please report it to support@teka-mh.co.za immediately.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via in-app notification and/or email. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the most recent revision was made. Continued use of Teka after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
